The primary purpose of this particular corner of my blogland, at least for the next little while, is to document books I've recently read. I'm starting law school this fall. Towards that end, I feel I need to speed up my reading, but with reasonable retention and interpretation.
This blog will be part of that process. I plan to make notes and comments on books I speed read over the summer--both as a way of learning to process them, and as a way of remembering all the useful bits of information I learned from the books as I sped through them.
I'm hoping to eventually reach a point where I can switch between close reading and speed reading at will, and where my speed reading will still yield a reasonable level of retention or at least of overarching concept. We'll see how I manage with that.
A final note: these won't be polished impressions or posts. I will be timing the writing of the entries, so that they take no more than 10 to 20 minutes to blurt out. Again, from what I understand, that kind of skill will also serve me well once I start school. But, as a warning to any readers who find this, I do suspect the quality of the content will be a strong reflection of that limitation on time--so, you know, CAVEAT EMPTOR and all that good stuff.
Rainer Maria Rilke: Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer.
